The region of Decatur, Alabama is known as a farming community. From the 1940’s to the 1970’s, the area was home to a large number of farms and ranches. In the latest report, the Alabama State Department of Agriculture found that there has been a decline in the number of ranches in the Decatur area since 2006.
In the last decade, the number of ranches in Decatur dropped from 6,822 to 3,716, a decline of 22.4 percent. The report said that the number of ranches, which are larger farms, are down by 24 percent.
The region was supposed to be the center of agriculture in Alabama, and the only way it would have been developed was by the Industrial Revolution.
